The hydrothermal crater Stefanos

The crater centre of Stefanos and the hot fumaroles with gases (98-104 C!) and acid water boiling in them. A very dangerous place!
The hydrothermal crater Stefanos is one of the touristic attractions of Nisyros, even it is an active and dangerous volcano. In its crater centre there are many hot and acid fumaroles and there is always the danger, that somebody could slip into one of the 98-104 C hot and acid wholes. There were serious accidents in past. The hydrothermal eruptions took place in about 3000-4000 years ago and future activities are possible. The crater system is controlled since the year 2000 at the GEOWARN project by some European universities...

If you want to visit the crater - keep a safe distance to the fumaroles!
